Summary: Anybody want to be friends on Goodreads (seriously)? Also, worked out my blot feed and will be migrating over to it. Finally, have some ideas for movie nights and want feedback if anyone is interested.

Call out to GoodReads, blot feed is up and working, possible movie nights

First up, let's talk about Goodreads. The "social site for book lovers" (I made that tag line up, but they are a social site for readers). I have profile on it. One of the only ones to survive the social-site-purge I went through a month ago. I have something like twenty friends on there, only five or so are actual people I know. Figured I would do a call out for anyone who likes to read and might enjoy the experience. If I do start up an online book club this summer, Goodreads is likely to be the spot for it. Just FYI.

Sat down and worked out the blot feed this afternoon. Didn't take too long: mostly just a shifting around ideas already in place, changing variable names, updating an algorithm here or there. You might have noticed the change in the front page or a change in the way the feeds are laid out, if you use either (as opposed to links through Buzz or Twitter). It's not a big change, by any stretch, but a change. One of the only downsides to the new system is that the feed will no longer have full text of the blog entries. I'm thinking about setting up a "full text" feed, but I'll wait and see if people request one. Also, rather than have entries have a intermediate jump point, I'm going to just have them linked to as full. This will likely wobble back and forth over the next couple of days, so if you have a preference, let me know.

Ok, about to go finish The Watcher Out of Time (something like 1.5 stories to go) and then start, likely, Martin Amis's Time's Arrow. Before I do that, though, wanted to let you know what ideas I had brewing for a movie night. For those who have never attended, the general idea when I host a movie night is to pick a few (two to three) "loud" movies and then sit around and watch them with friends. Not MST3K style, per se, because you do not get bonus points for clever retorts, but definitely more laid back than a group of guys sitting around sushing each other continuously. This is an extension of the b-movie night at 4205, and a lot of the movies chosen are b-movies, but not all. The following pairings are being thought about, and I'm curious to hear if anyone else has any ideas.

  • Stuart Gordon Night: Dagon, From Beyond, Re-Animator.
  • Japanese Splattergore Night: Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, Meatball Machine.
  • H.P. Lovecraft Night: one from the SG night, above, plus Call of Cthulhu (silent) and something else.
  • Vampire Night: Dracula (Hammer), Lost Boys, and Dusk til Dawn.
  • Slightly Old School Night: In the Mouth of Madness, Night of the Creeps, CHUD and/or Night of the Comet.
  • Japanese Horror Night: TBD.
  • Zombie Retrospective: I Walked with a Zombie, Zombie, Return of the Living Dead, and maybe Survival of the Living Dead.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
