[About Dickens of a Blog]

Summary: I propose a system to measure how bad a book is compared to its predecessor, talk briefly about reading the opening of the sixth Hitchhiker's Guide, and then go on to discuss some upcoming website updates and working on a compilation of my poetry.

Brians as a unit of measurement, reading HGttG book 6, website updates, and compiling my poetry

I have to do about three or four hours of stuff in the next hour or so, so I will make this post blessedly brief (all of those who worry about my 2-3 pagers, breathe easy):

(1) Brians: I propose a system of measurements, a way of stating the drop of quality between one book and it's follow-up, especially (but not necessarily) in light of pastiches, copy-cats, second party follow-ups, multi-author serials, and so forth. The scale should be from 0 to 8. 0 means the book is just as good as the previous ones or maybe even better. A 0 Brians book enhances with no detraction. A 4 (the median) would mean that it has some faults, but otherwise belongs in the series. It detracts as equally as it adds. A 2 would mean that it actively adds to the series and does a fair job. A 6 would be a deeply troubled addition, but one that still somewhat adds to the series, albeit a lesser amount and not all fans will accept it as true canon. An 8 means that it practically destroys the series, and, to the degree that it is treated as canon, retroactively lessens the original volumes. For instance, if you take 8 books to poorly tell the story that you father could have done in 1, you get 8 Brians.

(2) 6th HGttG: And Another Thing... came out. This is book six in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Of course, it is not written by Douglas Adams, and the last book or two (depending on whom you talk to) in the original series were lesser volumes, so at first glance, the chance this book will live up to its title seems grim. Sample readings, done online on a few websites, pit it somewhere around the 3-5 Brian amount. My plan is to read it, tonight and/or tomorrow, and have some notes on it by Thursday.

(3) To-do: Website!: I am going to be doing a round of additions to my website over the next few weeks. Namely, I am going to be sifting through a lot of my journal entries and connecting them to the primary pages on my site, and correcting a few mistakes here or there. This is mostly me saying this outloud so that I will remember to do it.

(4) Poetry compilation: I am finally sitting down and rewriting, editing, compiling, and compressing my poetry into a single volume. I have no idea what I am going to do with it, just yet. I am going to do something, though.

Si Vales, Valeo

Where did the comment box go?

Due to most of my friends using alternate means to contact me, and mostly SPAM bots using the comment box method, I have removed it. If you wish to contact me, please feel free to use any human-friendly contact method you wish. Thanks!
