Summary: Trying to help a friend I did a search via Google. Oh, the results it returned.

BLOT: (10 Jul 2013 - 02:58:05 PM)

Google tops itself as I search for Martian science fiction. I'm now vaguely scared of my own search history and what might have triggered it.

A friend asked me to help her find a book. This is the description she gave:

It takes place on mars... I remember the martians tricked the humans who landed there into thinking they were back home on earth but this one man wasn't fooled. The others may have died, can't recall. I remember later the man has to have 'relations' with an alien to help propagate their species...

The first part could be a reference to Ray Bradbury's "The Third Expedition". The latter bit, having sex with an alien, is very common in SF. Still, I figured that we'd start with the obvious bit, the tricked out of the shuttle/rocket bit, and see if other stories have used that trope (or if my friend is mashing together a couple of stories into one). Note the bottom result that was returned. Either Google is psychic, and knew what my next search was going to entail [presumably something like "Sexy martian lady times"] , or there is something scary in my search history that I need to stamp out. Or, somehow, the phrases "Martian" and "tricked" showed up in that article.*

Oh, Google, never change.**

BTW, for those of you who like/love Mars-based SF, have a Wiki list!

* No, I did not click on it.

** Remember the old joke about how you can search for anything, and eventually porn would show up, often involving two women and, in rare cases, a tenuous reference to whatever you did search: "You want local bible studies? Here's some nun fetishism!"? I wonder if "man had sex with horse" news is the new version of that.
