Summary: There was a volatile time in my State's history. I doubt Alabama will ever properly come to terms with its past, but here is to one of the heroes from it.

Fred Shuttlesworth survived multiple attempts on his life, including one involving a bomb, and when told to run said, in effect, that "He didn't get saved just to run." [Note: the version NPR reported today varied in wording, but not meaning]. He overcame obstacles most of us would easily bow before, and did it with dignity and perseverance.
So, here's to you, Fred Shuttlesworth.
